In August 2010, Arjun Atwal made history for his country by winning the Wyndham Championship on the US PGA Tour, becoming the first Indian to win on that Tour. His triumph in the Wyndham Championship could not have come at a better time as he had lost his PGA Tour card in July when his minor medical exemption ran out. As well as becoming the first Indian to win on the US PGA Tour, he was the first Monday qualifier to triumph since Fred Wadsworth at the 1986 Southern Open. The first prize of US$918,000 bumped up his season’s winnings to US$1,507,143 ranking him 55th on the Money List. The popular golfer’s last victory on the Asian Tour came in the 2008 Maybank Malaysian Open, which was his seventh victory on the circuit. He topped the Asian Tour Order of Merit in 2003 before furthering his career in the United States. Arjun won his national Open in 1999 at Royal Calcutta Golf Club – which is where he grew up playing golf. It was his maiden victory on the Asian Tour and proved to be his launch pad to stardom. In the United States he is a regular practice partner of Tiger Woods. Arjun is exclusively managed in partnership with Blue Giraffe Enterprises. |
