The caliber of David Gleeson is reflected by the fact that he grew up playing amateur golf with Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy and Brett Rumford. In fact, he was one of his country’s finest amateurs winning the Australian Amateur in 1996. That same year he was part of the Australian team that claimed The Eisenhower Trophy, which is the prestigious World Amateur Team Championship. He has a natural gift for the game with many players rating him one of the best ball strikers in the region. Technique coupled with a laid back demeanor combine well when playing golf at the highest level and it has helped the Australian record two towering victories in Asia, firstly in the Volvo China Open in 2002 and later in the 2008 Macau Open. He enjoyed one of the finest seasons of his career in 2008 when he finished fifth on the Asian Tour Order of Merit with one victory and six other top-10s. He came close to winning half a million dollars that year. Still in his early 30s he has plenty of time to claim more honours and competes on both OneAsia and the Asian Tour. A talented musician he often plays the piano or guitar to entertain his fellow professionals and friends at tournaments around the region. |
