Sachin Tendulkar is one of the world’s greatest and most beloved cricketing icons of all time. He was only 16 when he made his Test debut and just a year later at 17, he made his first Test century at Old Trafford. Early on in his career, he’d made a lasting impression on the legendary Sir Donald Bradman who apparently remarked to his wife that the Little Master (as Sachin is widely known in India), reminded him of himself.Over the course of Tendulkar’s much celebrated 20-year career, he earned his greatness through two forms of the game: Tests and One-Day Internationals (ODIs). He achieved 16 Test centuries before he turned 25 and by 2000, he became the first batsman to score 50 international hundreds.

On Friday 17 October 2008, during the second test against Australia at Mohali, the Little Master broke Brian Lara’s record of nearly two years to become the highest test-run scorer in the history of cricket – one of the most anticipated and revered moments in sport. As the match progressed that day, Tendulkar would go on to score his fiftieth half-century, and become the first player ever to hit the 12,000 run mark. Later in the series, he would also score his fortieth test century.

Currently, Tendulkar also holds the record for the most hundreds in both Test and ODIs. A humanitarian at heart, he sponsors 200 underprivileged children in India every year through Apnalaya, a Mumbai-based NGO.

Tendulkar does not only rank as the most prolific batsman in the history of cricket, but he also deserves a place among the world’s all-time greatest athletes.
